Nelson Film Society put on a Festival of Funny Films from the silent era with piano accompaniment by Len Assheton-Harbord. Assheton-Harbord recalls the days of the Hollywood silent film era. Recalls the diffiuclty of registering at Hollywood’s central casting office with over 40,000 extras already listed. Discusses the stars of the industry he worked with, including D. W. Griffith, Lilian Gish, and Douglas Fairbanks. Describes his accidental move into a composing career and the way music would evolve for a particular film. Describes the death of theatre orchestras and music writers with the arrival of the talkies and his subsequent move to voice training.
