GRAPE HARVEST: Late summer in Hawkes Bay is time for the grape harvest. The grapes are taken to New Zealand’s largest winery, McWilliams in Hastings. The white grapes are shovelled into an elevator and into the crushers. A stemmer crushes the red grapes. Throughout the winemaking process the juice is analyzed in the laboratory.
APPLES EVERY DAY: Follows the quest to find cheap, fresh apples. Fruit shops in Queen Street, Auckland display signs “Sign the petition” in their windows.
In Wellington, a comical character, Bert, is harrassed by his nagging wife to bring home some apples. He’s off to the fruit shop, but in the tram on the way home Bert drops his apples down the front of a woman’s dress. He tries his luck bidding at the fruit and vegetable market but ends up purchasing bulk cabbages. His final attempt sees him carrying his apples home in tomato boxes, unfortunately they get in the way on the tram as well. The New Zealand Apple and Pear Board have solved Bert’s problem with a new packing plant which prepacks small quantities of apples in plastic and provides them cheaply to the public. Bert has some delivered to his home while he sits in the back yard drinking beer. Shows Wellingtonians queuing outside the Public Open Market and people picking and sorting apples at an orchard.
