Cyclopolis: Celebrating Christchurch City of Bikes

Cyclopolis

2017 marks 200 years since the invention of the bicycle. Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision and Heritage New Zealand present three programmes, compiled from historic film footage and audio recordings, with each exploring a different aspect of more than a century of cycling in Christchurch and around the world.

10am: A Cinematic Century of Bicycling presents cycling in the 20th century, from rough roads to women’s liberation.

11am: Round the Gorges Race follows competitors on a 100 mile cycle road race through GlenTui, Ashley and Waimakariri Gorges in 1939. The silent film will be accompanied by live musicians.

1pm: Cycling Safety explores changing advice about how to take care of your bicycle and how to take care on the road, from television and film collections.

2pm: A repeat screening of A Cinematic Century of Bicycling presenting cycling in the 20th century, from rough roads to women’s liberation.
