Jim McClay has been replaced by Jim Bolger as leader of the National Party on the same day that the New Zealand party announced that it would merge with the National Party

Roger Douglas has re-assessed the internal deficit and measured it at $2 billion, a 30% increase on previous estimates due to lower than expected tax revenue. Douglas has announced a series of measures to reduce Government expenditure and improve efficiencies.

Over 30 people have been killed in protests against the apartheid system in South Africa. At least 10 people were shot by police in the township of Winterveld and rioting and unrest continues across the country. Peter Sharp reports from South Africa.

The United States is discounting an offer from the Soviet Union to mutually withdraw naval forces from the Mediterranean as the United Nations meets to consider the stand-off between Libya and America. The capital remains calm following the bombing of the city and Gaddafi has stated he does not seek to escalate the confrontation. Tim Ewart reports from Tripoli: Colonel Gaddafi.

There are suggestion that Ronald Reagan initiated the bombing of Libya in retaliation for Gaddafi’s support of the Nicaraguan Sandinista government and to build domestic support for the Contra rebels who are receiving American military aid. Jon Snow reports from Washington:

A secret meeting between soccer clubs belonging to the first division of the English Football League has resulted in an ultimatum demanding reform. The clubs have threatened to form their own league unless the 10 point plan is adopted.

England has defeated the Soviet Union 1 – 0 in a friendly soccer match in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Reports from Central America state that Nicaraguan soldiers are retreating from Honduras following strikes against Contra rebels based in the neighbouring country. The United States have been providing air transport and logistical support to Honduras. Peter Collins reports from Honduras.
