In April 1885, Maniapoto Māori chiefs agreed to let the railway, through the King Country, the last frontier for European settlers and the last section of the main trunk line to close the communication gap between Auckland and Wellington. This special weekend long trip south is to commemorate the occasion. Te Kuiti is the last stop before the rugged and beautiful King Country. This section proved to be the most difficult and logistical feat of the entire NZ Railways network.

Over 6,000 gather at the Taumarunui Domain to watch the New Zealand Axemen’s Championships. Jim Whittaker of Raurimu wins the prize of £100 and a trophy worth £25 for the Taumarunui Open Handicap event. Wally Jones of Taumarunui is holder of the unofficial world’s record of 13 seconds for a 12 inch block. His brother Tory Jones is also a world class axeman and goes on to win the New Zealand 12 inch championship.
