A record of the “Bideford Lake” which was caused by a very large landslip, partly triggered by an earthquake, which blocked the Wainuiomapu Stream (Maringi Valley) between June and October 1991.

Views of lake [approx 1 km in length]. Speed boat being used to ferry mail and families cut off by the lake. Views from speed boat. Attempts by the Wellington Regional Council to build a bypass road and attempting to blast the slip. Views of the mess left behind after the lake had drained.
Footage includes shots of Linda Warrington the local postie who tragically died in the same valley during floods in August 2004.
Shot of the front page of the Wairarapa Times-Age and a segment from One Network News (Footage in this item was shot by Fred Holloway and appears earlier in the film).
