“In the Central North Island our reporter, Simon Shepherd, was the first journalist to land at the Mt Ruapehu’s Crater Lake and stand where the banks were breached. Simon also speaks with DOC officer Dave Wakelin, who warn visitors to steer clear of the Crater Lake.

Today marks the 4th anniversary of the war in Iraq. President George Bush made promises to the Iraqis four years ago and as the invasion began in Iraq many people believed him. Among them was Kadhim al-Jubouri and as the US Forces rolled into Baghdad he triumphantly took a sledgehammer to the statue of Saddam Hussein. Now he wishes the statue and the man were back.

It hasn’t been a great period for the Corrections Department or the people it deals with. Allegations of corruption at Rimutaka Prison, the murder of a Wellington man by Graeme Burton whilst out on parole, the murder of 17 year old Liam Ashley in a prison van. The government’s response is to hold a review, but reviews and overhauls have long been a feature of Corrections in New Zealand. It's all been documented in a new book written by Canterbury University Criminologist, Greg Newbold. He says despite a hundred years of experiments, our jails are still failing in one important area, producing reformed prisoners. Claire Silvester asked him why.

And the South by Southwest is an annual music, film and interactive festival held in Austin Texas, the city widely regarded as the live music capital of the world. What makes this event different is that it's not attended by fans but by the entertainment industry's most powerful players. This year 12 kiwi bands were accepted to perform in Austin and reporter Belinda Henley followed their journey.
