A report by Doug Laurenson [Military Service no. 34957], commentator with the New Zealand Mobile Broadcasting Unit, based in Cairo with the New Zealand Division. Part 3 of 4.
Laurenson describes how New Zealand soldiers cope with the dust, which covers everything within a matter of seconds in the Western Desert, where they are on field exercises. He explains how different the landscape is compared to New Zealand.
He explains the role of the battalion's navigator who has to guide up to a thousand men. He accompanied a Sergeant-Major from Dunedin who was in this role on a field exercise and describes the accuracy of his work.
This item is part of a collection of recordings made by the Mobile Broadcasting Units, which travelled overseas with New Zealand forces between 1940-1945. They recorded New Zealanders' experiences of war and messages to their families and friends, which were sent back home to be played on a weekly radio programme
