This history by City Librarian C.H. Hulls was recorded as part of centenary celebrations in 1956.

He discusses early meetings to find room to house the library’s reading rooms. The library originally house newspapers, hosted lectures and sought funds to erect new buildings. The library was eventually moved to the Cathedral college and was made free for Invercargill citizens.
