Side 1: A history of the column commemorating the discovery of New Zealand by Abel Tasman in 1642. He first landed in Golden Bay and an account of his travels through New Zealand his legacy are given.
Side 2: Covers the history of the ground around Kororareka in the North Island, beginning the CMS Mission Church, New Zealand’s oldest church. It was visited by Charles Darwin in 1835, consecrated in 1839 and served as a meeting place for between Māori and Pakeha where Captain Hobson read the Queen’s commission appointing him lieutenant governor. He describes Hone Heke’s famous felling of the flag in July 1844 in protest at unfulfilled promises of British colonisation and the subsequent battles. Bishop Pompallier’s house also stands on the site and is maintained as an historical museum.
