Police use radar to search for a body in Muriwai Forest, north west of Auckland. The search begins after police inquiries into the murder of Auckland prostitute Leah Stephens whose remains were found in in the forest in 1992, suggest another body could well be in the forest.

The Department of Conservation says a series of projects to create mainland nature reserves similar to those found on offshore islands will fail unless it gets more community support. Six of the so called Mainland Island projects have been setup around the country since 1994.

Peace is declared on the war torn island of Bougainville today with an exultant ceremony from the local islanders and a formal ceremony for politians. Hundreds of Bougainvilleans from both sides gather before the politicans and lay down their arms, during a ceremony of traditional dancing and singing.

Food Companies whose products contain the vitamin folate are urged to take part in a pilot study into health claims on food labels.
The study is launched by the Australia New Zealand Food Authority in July. [illegible] is a vitamin found naturally in a wide range of cereals, fruit and vegetables.
It's been chosen for the study because it is relativvely unknown and it significantly reduces the chances of spina bifida.
