Ngā Tamatoa Movement

David Ruru, a Wellington public servant, is interviewed about the aims of the Wellington branch of the Ngā Tamatoa group.

He says they originally began as a university group, but now encompass Māori from all walks of life. They visit prisons, boys' homes, etc. and they oppose any sporting contacts with South Africa due to apartheid.

Two of their members are working fulltime on coordinating support for the Māori land march from Northland, which is being organised by Whina Cooper. He explains land loss is one of Ngā Tamatoa's main concerns. They see their role as improving the lot of Māori in New Zealand.
