A reading of a letter from Charles Darling to his next of kin in Dunedin, written at the time of Sergeant Richard Charles Travis's death on 25 July 1918, during the first world war. Darling knew Travis personally and was deeply moved by his death. Both men were in the 2nd Otago Battalion. The letter is a personal account of Travis' bravery and achievements, including winning the Victoria Cross. There is also an account of the burial.

The recording concludes with a different speaker detailing biographical information about Charles Darling, who was also killed in action, on 26 August 1918 in France. There is also a description of the memorial clock in Dargaville erected in Darling's memory. There follows actuality of the clock chiming.

Recorded in 1964, unidentified reader and speaker.
