Brunner Mine 60th anniversary.

A brief report on the anniversary gathering at Stillwater Cemetery, Grey District, is followed by interview with 91 year old Mr H. G. Griffin, who saw the smoke from the explosion while working on the railway.

The explosion occurred on Thursday 26 March 1896. Mr Griffin gives an account of disaster scene and the attempts to rescue miners. He helped to carry bodies from the mine to the Brunner goods shed and placed coffins in the mass grave.

At the time of the interview [1956] Mr Griffin was believed to be the last man alive on the West Coast who had witnessed the disaster.
