Sergeant W. H. Mandeno of Auckland continues his talk.
As none of the original party came out of cover he left after dusk for
the hills. Next morning small parties of New Zealanders were setting off
for the southern coast. The food given to them by the villagers upset
some of the men, fortunately local remedies relieved the problem.
Because the Germans had occupied the area the original embarkation
point was changed as was the destination. This was again changed to an
island off the coast. Next morning the villagers on the Island gave them
breakfast, dressed their wounds and told them that the Germans were
expected any time.
