Part 1 of 2.

A commentary by Doug Laurenson [Military Service no. 34957], announcer for the Mobile Broadcasting Unit with the New Zealand forces in the Middle East, broadcasting from Cairo.

He reports on the work of a New Zealand pilot who is flying in Libya with the RAF. Laurenson describes talking to the Flight Lieutenant whose home is in Christchurch. His six years with the RAF have given him wider horizons than he saw with the Canterbury Flying Club. Laurenson then retells the pilot's experiences of night-flying over the desert in his own words. [Incomplete - Part 2 not held]

This item is part of a collection of recordings made by the Mobile Broadcasting Units, which travelled overseas with New Zealand forces between 1940-1945. They recorded New Zealanders' experiences of war and messages to their families and friends, which were sent back home to be played on a weekly radio programme.
