Recordings of proceedings in the New Zealand House of Representatives during a visit by a delegation from the Legislative Assembly of Western Samoa and the ceremonial presentation of set of trays for the Table of the House, on Thursday 8th of September 1955.
[According to Hansard, the Samoan delegation members were: Hon. M. Tualaulelei, Hon. J. Fonoti, Hon. M. Tofaeono, Hon. F. Betham accompanied by Secretary-Interpreter Mr Ainoa Kalapu.]
In the first part of this recording, the Sergeant-at-Arms announces the arrival of the Samoan Delegation and the Speaker of the House [Sir Matthew Oram] then welcomes to the members of the delegation from the Legislative Assembly of Western Samoa. His speech is translated into Samoan by anr unidentified man [probably Ainoa Kalapu.] The Speaker then calls on the Honorable Tualaulelei to address the House.
Hon. Tualaulelei then addresses the House in Samoan and speaks about about the relationship between Samoa and New Zealand and the development of parliamentary procedure in his country. His speech is translated into English [probably by Ainoa Kalapu.]
He ends by presenting a set of trays is to the Table of the House.
In part two, Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Sidney Holland speaks. He thanks the Samoan delegation for the trays. The Leader of the Opposition, the Rt. Hon. Walter Nash also gives a speech, paying tribute to the people of Samoa and their history and noting that they are entering upon self-government and promising New Zealand's continuing support as they move towards self-governance. [Both Mr Holland and Mr Nash's speeches are translated into Samoan.]
A resolution is moved thanking the Samoan delegation and the Speaker of the House then proposes the motion which is agreed to unanimously[also translated into Samoan.]
