A range of measures have been outlined by the Prime Minister today that are aimed at making houses more affordable. In her annual statement to Parliament Helen Clark also announced a 446 million dollar funding boost over four years for social services dealing with poverty and violence. Extra Australian troops have landed in East Timor to help maintain calm in the capital Dili. Fears of violence followed the shooting of the President Jose Ramos-Horta and an attack on a car carrying the prime minister Xanana Gusmao yesterday. A member of a prominent Canterbury family is tonight in jail for the rape and sodomy of a teenage girl. Businessman Peter Stewart was convicted late last year on seven sex abuse charges dating back more than 30 years and he was sentenced in the High Court in Christchurch this morning. Charges for murder and conspiracy have been brought against the alleged planners of the September the 11th attacks. Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who is accused of master minding the attacks, and five other co-conspirators being held at Guantanamo Bay are due to be tried in military tribunals and could be executed if they're convicted. A government report into claims of bullying and assaults at Hutt Valley High School does not say if the school did anything wrong. Over the summer, media reported allegations of schoolyard sex, drinking, drug taking and bullying.
