Teone Taare Tikao of Ngai Tahu was born in 1850 and died 77 years later and during his life time amassed an enormous amount of knowledge about Māori mythology, cosmology, history and whakapapa.
As a youth he was educated in the old ways of the Māori by two tohunga, in a training period that was to last for ten years.
Teone lived at various places on Banks Peninsula, Port Levy, Wainui and
Rapaki, and became recognised as a major authority on Te Waipounamu
Māori traditions.
George Tikao is a grandson of Teone Taare Tikao. He speaks about his
poua (grandfather) and the release of the book "Tikao Talks" reprinted by Penguin Books.
