New Zealand National Youth Choir’s international tour of 1988.
In early 1988 Kaleidoscope approached the NZ Youth Choir authorities with the idea of making a documentary about the tour to Europe that the choir was to undertake from July to september that year. The chief sponsors of the choir, British Petroleum, agreed to support this venture, and a small documentary crew departed with the choir in July.
The crew stayed with the choir for the first half of the tour... Llangolien in Wales, then on to Munich, Salzburg and finally to the Singers of the World Competition in Vienna, where the NZ Youth Choir took out the top title of Choir of the World amongst the highest level international competition.
The choir went on to Hungary, Venice and back to Britain, whilst the production crew returned home to quickly cut the post production project to hit its scheduled deadline.
Several of the singers made an international career for themselves; others have supported choirs throughout NZ. For the conductor Peter Godfrey, it was the fitting climax of an outstanding career.
