Peter Coates was in Europe on a Q.E.II broadcasting grant in 1975 studying in Munich, and he directed a couple of documentaries for TVNZ using foreign technical crew while there.

THE FIRE AND THE SNOW is a poetic representation of life in Moscow under communist rule. Attempting to refute some of the archetyping of the day that was promoted in the West, seven different Muscovites are filmed in their home environment, amongst family and friends during the Christmas season.
