THE ASTRONAUT

Over the past two years Australian artist Shane McGrath has been working on an "Australia/ New Zealand trilogy" about historical myth and Antipodean relations. In his latest work The Austronaut, an Australian spaceman colonises Wellington by landing at the Basin Reserve, planting an Australian flag and throwing a boomerang. Previously McGrath made two films about Cricket Kelly, a mythical figure made of cricket pads who appears over the hill of the Basin Reserve only to die in a fusillade of cricket balls.
