Auckland Council has removed notices from its public pools after complaints of racism. The posters depicted a pākeha woman urging a brown skinned boy to use the toilet before going swimming in the pool. Iwi, archaeologists and the Department of Conservation believe they are close to discovering the first site of human settlement in Aotearoa. The discovery of numerous significant Māori taonga in the Bay of Islands have been dated to before the great migration. Moa bones, obsidian and traditional tattooing instruments were found in the area of Mangahawea Bay and Moturoa Island and are thought to date from roughly 1250AD. Crayfishermen on the East Coast are urged to abide by the catch limits by the Ministry for Primary Industries. Tributes are being given to Wally Hayward of Ngāpuhi who has passed away at the age of 84. He was a prison chaplain and a founder of the Māori Evangelical Fellowship who was guided by his faith. Police are investigating threatening comments made to a Work and Income staff member in Rotorua today. The office was placed in lockdown and clients were asked to evacuate the building.  

UCOL will be teaching Graham Lowe’s “Kcik for the Seagulls” education programme at Manawatū Prison. The rehabilitation programme seeks to improve education and employment outcomes for prisoners  

The International Peace Youth Group and Rangi Whakaaio are looking to empower youth in addressing the problems facing their generation. A focus has been mental health, wellbeing and the use of social media, but conflict, climate change and displaced peoples are also big issues they wish to increase awareness of.
