A radio news announcement about the release of the report by the Royal Commission of Enquiry on the Mount Erebus disaster.
The pilots and crew of Air New Zealand flight TE901 have been cleared of blame for causing the tragedy. Radio New Zealand Political Editor, Trevor Henry, reports from Parliament on the findings of Justice Peter Mahon’s enquiry. He reads Judge Peter Mahon's findings that the cause of the disaster was Air New Zealand's act in changing the computer track of the aircraft without telling the captain or crew. The Commission places responsibility for this error on "incompetent administrative airline procedures".
The pilot, co-pilot, and the Board of Air New Zealand have been exonerated. However, the report is critical of the actions of the Chief Executive of Air New Zealand, Morrie Davis, in directing the destruction of some documents relating to Antarctic flights.
