The Patea Maori Club became a household name in NZ in 1984 when Poi E spent 22 weeks in the charts, 4 of them at no.1. A dispute over rights meant that TVNZ pulled the song, but despite this the song was still successful in the charts.

A Kiwi classic, Prime Minister Helen Clark has said Poi E is her "favourite song of all time."

Written in 1982 but not picked up by recording companies, the song was recorded after Dalvanius formed his own company in 1983.
