Len Lye Collection

We are able to license items from the Len Lye Collection upon request.

Requesting collection items

Most items in the collection can be made available for use in film or television productions, exhibitions and other projects.

Note that material available to watch and listen to online might not be suitable for use in all projects.

To enable access to more of our collection, the online collection includes older digitisations. These may not be suitable quality for reuse and are intended for reference use only. Our Customer Supply team will advise.

Browse the collection and create a list of the items you are interested in using My List. Our Help with searching page will assist you.

Once you have your list, make a request via the Make a request page.

If your request is urgent, please indicate your deadline.

Personal use requests

As Aotearoa New Zealand’s audiovisual archive, we care for a huge range of taonga.

Personal use refers to requests received from people wanting to access the collection either for their general interest or because they or their whānau connect to it directly.

These requests are subject to rights clearances and whether we have a digital copy available for sharing.

Personal use requests can be very resource intensive. We will endeavour to process as many of these requests as we can, but there may be some requests we will not be able to fill.

Timeframes

Many items in our collection require extensive processing before they can be made available. This takes time. Turnaround times depend on the nature of the request. Please allow 4-6 weeks at a minimum.

Pricing

Online and on-site viewing of digitally available collection material is free of charge.

Please make a request to arrange on-site viewing at the National Library in Wellington.
