Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role
Reporting to the Manager Audience Engagement and Mātauranga Māori Outreach, you will support the team to deliver the Iwi Engagement Strategy and facilitate access to the significant mātauranga Māori within our Taonga Māori collections. The Kaitohutohu Matua Mātauranga Māori is a thought leader in their field, and will provide project leadership to the Group, as well as coaching, development opportunities and mentoring to others in the team. They will present events and public programmes as required to maximise engagement with the Taonga Māori collection and enhance the reputation of Ngā Taonga.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
We’re looking for someone who is excited by the idea of joining our journey to lead, drive and implement strategic projects and initiatives to translate leadership decisions and requests into effective action.
You will have:
- Proven experience in project/programme leadership working across teams & stakeholders
- 3+ years senior experience in a public programmes role or similar
- High level of experience in project management and implementation using recognised tools and practices
- Experience building networks and working on collaborative projects with iwi & Māori communities
- Experience presenting to public audiences in te reo Māori and English
- Knowledge and understanding of tikanga & te Tiriti o Waitangi settlements processes

The Property Operations team has been newly formed to manage the Ngā Taonga property portfolio and facilities to ensure that they operate safely and effectively for both our people and our audiovisual collections. The property portfolio spans both owned and leased properties comprising standard offices, technical spaces and climate-controlled vaults. The team is also key to supporting an organisational culture that adopts strong health and safety practices.
Ko ngā pūkenga e hiahiatia ana | About you
We’re looking for someone who is excited by the idea of getting stuck into the day-to-day running of facilities and logistics coordination across Ngā Taonga properties to ensure the smooth running of facility management and contractor operations. This is a physical role that involves regular driving, heavy lifting and ladder use.
We’re looking for someone with:
- About two years’ experience in a hands-on facilities management role.
- A full NZ Driver’s License
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.
- Good understanding of the importance of health and safety regulations and practices.
- Excellent time management and planning skills and the ability to maintain high standards and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Comfortable operating in a tikanga / kaupapa Māori environment.
- Good oral and written communication skills and experience with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Understanding of storage and/or controlled climate environments is an advantage.
Ko ngā whāinga o te tūranga: | The role will see you:
This role, with a home base and focus on the Archive’s Avalon / Motutawa facility in Lower Hutt, contributes to and implements robust facilities management practices to ensure the Archive’s properties are operated in a way that is efficient and safe for both kaimahi and collections.
The role is also responsible for identifying and working with relevant kaimahi to mitigate and/or resolve health and safety hazards and risks, championing good health and safety practices. The role provides input into the creation and maintenance of policies, procedures and other documentation relating to health and safety practices and emergency response preparedness.
The role will see you:
- Contribute to the establishment and ensure compliance with approved standards for Ngā Taonga facilities.
- Proactively support the Property Operations Manager to ensure contract maintenance and building, and infrastructure upgrades, are completed on schedule.
- Site coordination of all properties, acting as primary site contact for the landlord, contractors, and neighbouring businesses in the Motutawa precinct during business hours.
- Provide support for planned collection movements for all repositories and on-site coordination at Motutawa.
- Champion good health and safety practices and provide input into improvements.

Salary: $71,811 - $84,484 + superannuation
This is an exciting time to join Ngā Taonga as we’re establishing a new team as part of a change in approach to property management. That approach will also focus on our H&S practices, implementing best practice systems and driving culture change towards embedding H&S into all of our ways of working.
