DIGGING - WHO WERE THE MOA-HUNTERS? At the Waitaki River, South Canterbury archaeologists research the origins of the moa-hunters. Rock drawings in caves which will be flooded by the Benmore scheme are being recorded. Leslie Lockerbie takes a sample from a site at Papatowai in South Otago for radiocarbon dating. Dr Roger Duff of the Canterbury Museum supervises excavation work in a cave at Sumner. A significant discovery is made.
