050:13 SPORTS CLIPS TENNIS
NSW Davis Cup player Sidwell plays RS McKenzie former New Zealand Champion. Despite McKenzie’s tremendous backhand, Sidwell’s brilliant volleying caused a lot of trouble for McKenzie even though this was probably one of his better games if not his best. The game ended in favour of Sidwell.

22 cars take part in a race at Wigram for New Zealand’s first Championship Roadrace. The winning car was No.2 a 1931 Brooklyn Reilly owned and driven by M Proctor of Wellington.
He did the 105 mile course in 95 minutes 56 seconds.

Despite wind and rain at Wellington’s Athletic Park teams participating in the New Zealand Marching Association Championships continued. Two hours later, however, the judges declared the championships a “no competition”.
052:52 WELLINGTON .... INVESTITURES AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE
It was an important day for Maori people when Sir Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa) received the KCMG for his services to science and literature. The Prime Minister attended the investiture and the Governor General presented the awards on behalf of His Majesty the King. In addition there were two other new Knights, Major General Sir Norman Weir and Sir David Smith, Chancellor of the University of New Zealand. Over 100 people received awards before morning tea was served on the lawn outside a large marquee.
053:40 SCIENCE .... EXCAVATING MOA REMAINS
In a North Canterbury swamp near Waikari an expedition from the Canterbury Museum is excavating Moa bones, a large flightless bird which roamed New Zealand in prehistoric times. Dr Murphy a prominent ornithologist is also working on the site. A record number of skeletons have been found in this swamp and will be used to build up museum exhibits in New Zealand and overseas. The collection is also the largest deposit of Moa remains found for over 50 years.
