Photography: George Edward Gilltrap (born Giltrap, 1911-1966)

Originally captured on colour 16mm film, this home movie is from the George Gilltrap collection. George Edward Gilltrap (born Giltrap, 1911-1966) was a vintage car enthusiast who established Gilltrap’s Motor Museum in Rotorua before relocating with his family from New Zealand to Australia in 1959 where he established Gilltrap’s Gold Coast Auto Museum.

This film is notable for its footage of the Vulcan bomber XA897 during Operation Tasman Flight in 1956 and the scenes of people sitting in “Genevieve”, a 1904 Darracq automobile which may have been filmed at the opening of the Gold Coast Auto Museum in 1959.

Avro Vulcan strategic bomber flying overhead at a low altitude, banking and circling. Hills in the background.

People in evening wear taking turns to sit in “Genevieve”, a 1904 Darracq and posing for the camera. These people may include George Gilltrap himself and Gordon Chalk, the State Transport Minister for Queensland.
