THE SOUND OF A PAINTING

“Filmed during the “Hotere: Out the Black Window” exhibition at the Wellington City Art Gallery. Greg O’Brien curated this collection of Hotere’s works which makes use of the written word and inspiration from literature. Ralph Hotere employs diverse texts spanning Jesuit influences from his childhood in the far north, his father’s chanting of ancient Maori waiata and karakia, and the contemporary prose and poetry of Hone Tuwhare, Cilla McQueen, Bill Manhire and Ian Wedde.
“From pen, to the brush, to the moving image, this short work begins to explore the reciprocal inspiration between NZ artists and writers, showing the collision of cultures, genders and centuries of expression and belief in the creation of new forms and landscapes of interpretation.” - From video sleeve.
