“If there were no rules governing election advertising the party with the richest supporters would simply spend as much as it took to win every single time. So to level the playing field, parties including small and poor parties get money from the State so their voices can be heard and all parties have various controls placed on their spending. But now the Auditor General says some parties spent taxpayer money they were given for other things on electioneering. Claire Silvester looks at how this system works.
And the Auditor-General singled Labour out for unlawfully spending taxpayer dollars than any other party. We have a one on one interview with Prime Minister Helen Clark about what she plans to do.
Plus... Screening Sunscreen. It is that time of year when the SunSmart message goes out to everyone to slip, slop and slap on some sunscreen. We dutifully do it and then wander out thinking we are protected. The problem is most people are only getting about a quarter to a third of the protection that it says on the bottle and with skin cancer rates so high, that is a real concern.
And we have an update on the story of Cate Carden, who died of breast cancer at the end of last year just months after sharing her experience on Campbell Live. Cate was a remarkable woman who despite her condition was a tri-athlete, wrote a book and inspired everyone around her. Caring for her two children and her husband Damian was the great priority of Cate's life, sadly though Cate got too sick to finish a project very dear to her. But it didn't end there, her friends, true to their word persuaded a number of local businesses to help get Cate's home extension built and now Cate's Cottage, as her family calls it, is finally finished."
