Lindsay Perigo presents the issues of the day in depth. “Behind tonight’s emergency meeting on the 1990 Commonwealth Games funding crisis, lies the frustration of the unpredictable. Games organisers find themselves facing a possible budget blow out, largely because so much sponsorship and support is still hovering around in the form of ‘maybes’ rather than firm commitments. And there’s a further touch of irony for an event which is expecting so much of a financial shortfall, it looks like being a runaway success in terms of participation. This report from Rob Harley.”

Louise Wallace presents the news of the day. The leader of the South Auckland Legionnaires Academy says the group will continue to function despite allegations of mistreatment within the ranks. A new public opinion poll is putting Opposition leader Jim Bolger under pressure. It shows a majority in favour of National changing its leadership to improve the Party’s chances at next year’s election. The [...] Association is warning that cost cutting may be seriously undermining treatment available for accident victims. ACC is looking at a series of reforms, but doctors say it’s another way of reducing the service to the detriment of patients. DSIR scientists have warned that some microwave ovens could be a health hazard if not used properly. They say that ovens with cold spots may not deal with harmful bacteria killed by conventional cooking. [Foreign news]

Lindsay Perigo presents the issues of the day in depth. “Up to 15 percent of cars on the road have dangerous repair faults. That’s according to some panel beaters who have accused State Insurance for ordering too much repair work on the cheap, pressuring them to take dangerous shortcuts. State rejects those charges, accusing the panel beaters of scaremongering. Ian Sinclair reports”.

“A last ditch campaign to save Wellington’s vice squad in the Wellington red light district. This time the campaign is not inspired by moral concerns. A night worker who describes herself as a Vivian Street veteran is petitioning police to keep the squad. Jim Greenhough paid a rare visit.”
