New Zealand is to get its own facility to pick up emergency locater signals from boats in distress. This follows a major delay in rescuing the crew from the yacht “Branch Office’ which overturned off Gisbourne. The crew were picked up after 20 stormy hours in a (well equipped) life raft. Their beacon signal was captured by a passing satellite and transmitted to a receiver in Alice Springs (Australia) which passed it on to Canberra which passed it on to the Airways Corporation in Christchurch which alerted the Rescue Coordination Centre in Wellington.
