After the bridge collapse in Minneapolis, it seems almost miraculous the death toll is currently as low as seven. The Minneapolis bridge is a steel truss construction, the same as the Auckland Harbour Bridge. And the two bridges have a similar traffic count, about 150,000 cars a day.
While it is not yet known what caused this 40-year-old bridge to collapse, one of the things that can go wrong with steel truss bridges is metal fatigue.
