A report by Doug Laurenson [Military Service no. 34957], commentator with the New Zealand Mobile Broadcasting Unit, based in Cairo with the New Zealand Division. Part 1 of 4.

He describes the unit's purpose and operation. The unit is centred on
Cairo and with the assistance of the Egyptian Broadcasting Service it
has complete broadcasting studios on the edge of the desert.
The unit has been able to send messages home with the help of the Egyptian Broadcasting Service and the BBC, which has allotted the New Zealand unit two, five-minute periods weekly.
He then begins a description of what life is like for a typical New Zealand infantryman on field exercises in the Western Desert.

This item is part of a collection of recordings made by the Mobile Broadcasting Units, which travelled overseas with New Zealand forces between 1940-1945. They recorded New Zealanders' experiences of war and messages to their families and friends, which were sent back home to be played on a weekly radio programme.
