1700 to 1707 NEWS
The Wellington region has taken a battering today, as strong winds and heavy rain wreaked havoc with transport systems and holiday makers' travel plans. Emergency services have also been stretched by the unseasonably stormy conditions, which have lashed the lower North Island since the weekend, but intensified around the capital today. Package from Patric Lane.
At the High Court in Dunedin today, the mother of a 23 month old baby was told it was unforgivable to allow her vulnerable daughter to go without medical care while she was suffering from several broken bones, and a serious head injury. Justice Chisholm made the statements as he sentenced her and two others, for their roles in events that ultimately led to the death of Iris Davidson in October 2002. 28 year old Brooke Lee Small, Iris's mother, and 42 year old Warihi Tauhore Wharehinga were both sentenced to 18 months jail.
A third person, 22 year old Rebecca Jane Lunt received 12 months supervision and community service for her lesser role in events. I/V Reporter Nathan Mills.
Two men who turned up safe back at Norfolk Island this morning after drifting at sea for two days are being described as extremely lucky to be alive. The pair went to test their five-metre runabout on Monday, without wearing life jackets or having a radio, distress beacon or auxiliary motor onboard. When their engine broke down, they drifted out to sea amid four metre swells. I/V Jim McLean from the National Search and Rescue Co-ordination Centre.
The Opposition is laying the blame for rocketing power prices at the feet of the government, saying it's guilty of grossly mismanaging the energy sector. National and ACT say the three state-owned generation companies are operating as regional monopolies and reaping huge profits at the consumer's expense. Package from political reporter, Jane Patterson.
President George W. Bush has made a defiant defence of the Iraq war and has urged Americans to stick with his leadership in an election-year State of the Union address. Speaking in the chamber of the House of Representatives before a joint session of Congress and with millions watching on television, Mr Bush set out an election year, stay-the-course agenda sprinkled with modest domestic proposals and warned that the memory of Sept. 11, 2001, requires a tough approach to terrorism. I/V Owen Fay, from feature story Washington.
A Christchurch man who pleaded guilty to 23 charges involving child pornography or bestiality on the internet has been sentenced to seven months in prison. I/V Reporter Joc Darling.
There's a new problem at Auckland's controversial landmark Bastion Point. Earth at the Michael Joseph Savage memorial on the site is subsiding, and there are fears soil and water are getting into the tunnels in which he is buried. The country's first Labour Prime Minister, who died in 1940, was buried in wartime tunnels deep underneath the national monument. I/V Auckland City's Heritage Manager, George Farrant.
