CHURCHILL PT2 (Copy part only)
This recording is an attempt by the National Broadcasting Mobile
Unit's staff to follow the censor's requirements. It also demonstrates
the power of a war censor even over a powerful world leader such as
Churchill. The recording carries two edits one at 1'39" from the start
and another at 2'45".
The words removed from Churchill's speech at the first edit are "And who
unanimously by their Parliament in secret session accorded you (the
NZEF troops), what is I am sure is your wish to see this job through to
the end".
The second edit removes the majority of his speech recorded as part 4 on
U2324. This included a list of the forces coming from the west, the 1st
British army, the armies of the USA and French army. These forces were
closing in and all the operations were to be combined.
See previous data entry details on Data Base records #17496 & #17504 for
details of his speech.
The original acetate recording on U2323 and U2324 carries a comment from
the New Zealand censor "Please effect cuts in record as per script".
There is no script with this collection to indicate what was to be
censored.
NOTE:- Copies of Churchill's speech are on U2386 & U2385, U2323 & U2324
and again on BBC acetates U2320 through to U2322. Preservation
copies are on DAT737 Tk02 to Tk05 and DAT737 Tk25 to Tk27 and all these
original and preservation copies have not been edited as required by
the Censor.
The BBC recordings on U2320 to U2322, DAT 737 Tk25 to Tk27 are the
preferred replay source because of their superior audio quality.
