A programme recorded by station 1XN Whangarei about the history of the Awanui Wireless Station.

Early submarine cables in New Zealand. Trans- Pacific Communications Cable opened in 1902 in Doubtless Bay, Northland. Awanui, Northland was the site for a high-powered telegraph station. It opened in 1913.

Features an interview with Bill Walker, the first engineer at Awanui. He describes the station which opened with the outbreak of World War I.

He recalls former staff, the aerials, mast, power supply and daily operations. The station was dismantled in 1929 by Mr Walker, when wireless telegraphy became commonplace.
