JUDD, Bill, Speaker/Kaikōrero
Radio New Zealand. National Programme (estab. 1964, closed 1986), Broadcaster

Bill Judd, former manager of Masterton radio station 2ZD, recalls some of the early days of broadcasting with the station. The Little Theatre production by the station's staff and the audience having to sit on apple boxes; with the help of Selwyn Toogood they raised $2000 in an ambulance appeal in one day.

Announcer, Mike Dunfrey was enlisted into the army for the weekend to cover army manoeuvers. The Boys Brigade Row-A-Thon. He recalls some of the 'community greats' that the station achieved - a complete recording and broadcast of the world president of Rotary (and they also recorded the Lions); elephant race from railway station to radio station - 12,000 people turned out to see it which was amazing when the entire population was 16,000; the Farmers request session from the shop window which blocked the street for about half an hour; the Springboks reception and the Golden Shears which really took off.

He talks about recording the opening night of 'Oklahoma' when they went live to the theatre - recalls that the orchestra wasn't that good especially in the opening so they inserted the London Symphony Orchestra for the broadcast. They always had great support from the station and the community.
