Since 2001, Radio New Zealand has broadcast on Waitangi Day an annual Waitangi Rua Rau Tau lecture in a series looking forward to the Waitangi bicentenary in 2040.
The series was launched by the New Zealand Māori Council and the Foundation for Indigenous Research in Society and Technology.
These lectures were delivered at Te Herenga Waka Marae, Wellington University grounds.
Lecture 1:
Ian McKinnon delivers the first of the 2013 Rua Rautau lectures, titled 'The role and contribution of education in crossing cultural boundaries'. Ian McKinnon is Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington and Deputy Mayor of Wellington and was formerly headmaster of Scots College and Wanganui Collegiate in New Zealand and Lower Master (Deputy principal) at Eton College in the UK. He is introduced by Roger Moses, principal of Wellington College.
Lecture 2:
Ian McKinnon explores the role of education in creating a society comfortable with cross-cultural difference; and Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi provides a personal survey of the evolution of the Māori community during the last 100 years.
