Part 1 of 8
Captain J. S. King [Military Service no. 9631] presents recordings made at the opening of the New Zealand Forces Club in central Cairo.
He describes the club's facilities: a concert room with a stage, tea room, restaurant and bar, officer's dining room, lounge and bar and reading and writing room; nurses' quarters, lounge and writing room, and a lounge, writing room, library and games room for the men. There is accommodation for 34 people to stay at the club - a room can be booked for up to seven consecutive days. The Club is open to all members of 2NZEF and all members of British and Empire forces in uniform.

This item is part of a collection of recordings made by the Mobile Broadcasting Units, which travelled overseas with New Zealand forces between 1940-1945. They recorded New Zealanders' experiences of war and messages to their families and friends, which were sent back home to be played on a weekly radio programme.
