Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh talks about the younger generation at an Auckland reception on 23 May 1968.

He speaks about how to help young people to prepare for the future. He says that lot can only be discovered by personal experience - some things cannot be taught, but can still be learned.

He says "every generation and every community gets precisely the younger generation it deserves". Young people should be involved in the problems and opportunities of adult society, and should be given responsibility. It is important that the talents and the abilities of young people are needed and appreciated - "young people will remain irresponsible so long as they are denied any form of responsibility".

He says there will always be frustration with authority, but much of this frustration can be avoided if the proper opportunities are made available for young people to learn by experience. Many youth organisations work towards this - he gives the examples of Outward Bound, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
