The Seventh Security Loan 1949 Empire Quiz presented by the Commonwealth Loans Organisation, held between Australia and New Zealand. It is hailed as being the "world's biggest quiz show" featuring "international two-way telephones".
Broadcast by the ABC in Australia and the NZBS in New Zealand, the quiz comprises of six rounds, with each team being asked the same questions. Australia wins 12-10. The quiz master is Australian broadcaster Walter Pym.
The Australian contestants are introduced as the 'Australian Quiz Champions of 1948'; Mr. G.E. Morris (sign writer, Melbourne), Mr. S. Robertson (consulting engineer, Melbourne), Mr. Bowman (school teacher, Sydney) and Mr. E.G. Whitlam (barrister, Sydney) [This is Gough Whitlam, later Prime Minister of Australia, 1972-1975.]
The New Zealand team in Wellington are introduced by broadcaster Selwyn Toogood: Mr. E.R. Dearnley (civil servant, Wellington), Mr. J.W. Winchester (civil servant, Wellington), Senior Sergeant J.C. Fletcher (Christchurch Police Force), Mr. Martin Cock (racing editor of the Southern Cross newspaper, Wellington).
After part one, Mr J.G. Barclay, New Zealand High Commissioner in Australia, reads an advertisement promoting the Seventh Security Loan, a government scheme offering people the chance to invest their money with the government with "liberal interest" and "guaranteed by the Commonwealth". The advertisement is repeated at the end of the programme by an announcer, Ron Ross.
