Paakiwaha is a weekly two-hour current affairs programme broadcast on Monday mornings on Radio Waatea. Delivered in English, it covers current issues from a Māori perspective. It has been broadcasting since 2002. Paakiwaha is funded by New Zealand On Air and is provided to various Community/Access stations and other broadcasters. In today’s programme:
1. Professor Boyd Swinburn: Advertising unhealthy foods. Prof. Swinburn is disappointed that Maori Television may look to advertise unhealthy food. MTS are in a vulnerable position especially when other media are free to advertise unhealthy foods.
2. Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene: Members of Ngapuhi met with Ngai Tahu over the kukupa saga.
3: Greens co leader Metiria Turei: beneficiaries debt to WINZ has risen. The Green Party, which requested the figures through parliamentary questions, says they show the government's hardship package announced in the budget won't go far enough.
4. Mike Smith headed a Ngapuhi delegation that journeyed to Norway to meet with Statoil officials about mining in the north. They also met with the Indigenous peoples to connect and share their concerns.
5. Dr Patu Hohepa: Swamp kauri and Sonny Tau: Maori in Northland are challenging the regional council's role in the mining of swamp kauri. A Ngapuhi elder says Ngapuhi Runanga chair Sonny Tau’s apology to Ngai Tahu doesn’t go far enough.
6. Ariana Paul talks to Willie Jackson about the importance of teaching science to tamariki at a young age.
