Reed, Alfred Hamish, 1875-1975
New Zealand Broadcasting Service (estab. 1946, closed 1962)

A.H Reed talks about his life.

Much of the programme is focused around his days in the gum fields and discussion of the kauri tree and kauri gum. He says Māori invented chewing gum as they used to chew the fresh gum from the tree. The gum was also used to make pigment for Māori tattooing. Pakeha used the gum to make varnish

He also discusses how (following the example of David Copperfield) he taught himself shorthand and moved to Auckland, finally finding a job at as a typewriter salesman. He talks about the early days of the typewriter in New Zealand.
