Paakiwaha is a weekly two-hour current affairs programme broadcast on Monday mornings on Radio Waatea. Delivered in English, it covers current issues from a Māori perspective. It has been broadcasting since 2002. Paakiwaha is funded by New Zealand On Air and is provided to various Community/Access stations and other broadcasters. In today’s programme:
1. Sonny Tau is the chair of Te Runanga a Iwi o Ngapuhi and he gives an update into the settling of treaty claims for Ngapuhi.
2. Waihoroi Shortland is the chair for Ngati Hine and there is still unrest over treaty claims and who is the body to negotiate on behalf of Ngati Hine.
3. Merepeka Raukawa Tait is the chair of Te Pou Matakana and there is concern that $20m Housing money will be going to Te Puni Kokiri and not Te Pou Matakana for distribution.
4. Former Minister of Whanau Ora Dame Tariana Turia will be flying to Abu Dhabi to receive an international award for Leadership in Tobacco Control, but she also talks about her disappointment that Te Puni Kokiri will be in charge of funding distribution instead of Te Pou Matakana.
5. Mana candidate for the Northland by election Rueben Taipari says unfortunately the media aren't interested in the likes of himself or Willow Jean Prime in the campaign.
6. Author Witi Ihimaera talks to Dale Husband about linguistic and genetic connections with Taiwan.
7. Co-leader of the Māori Party Te Ururoa Flavell talks to Dale Husband.
8. Ken Laban wraps up the show with the sporting highlights of the weekend.
