Rewi Alley sends a Christmas message to New Zealand, [via shortwave radio] from Shandan [Gansu] China, where he had set up the Shandan Bailie School of Agriculture and Forestry in 1944. [This recording was broadcast on Christchurch station 3ZB.]
He speaks about the extreme weather where his school is located and describes the nearby mountains and his location. He gives details of the different work they do through the year growing their own the food, entertainment - including New Year, and work.
He mentions New Zealanders Max Wilkinson of CORSO [who taught sheep husbandry in Shandan] and Courtney Archer of Rangiora. He also mentions industrial and craft training at the school and the support they have from the new Chinese [communist] government.
