This programme features Te Roopu Kotuku (Rutherford High School) from Te Atatu North, The word KOTUKU means WHITE HERON, symbolic to the schools motto TOHEA to STRIVE.

Lorraine Williams, who was the Māori teacher at the time formed the group in 1977, with eight foundation members.

In 1973 June Mariu became Māori Studies teacher and assumed responsibility for Te Roopu Kotuku. June says she was assisted by many people including Pita Sharples, Chris Ross, Rangi Pomana, and Hiwaroa Morrison.Te Roopu Kotuku also performs at the annual Manu Ariki competitions held in Taumarunui. There present membership is 50.

28'00"- 30'43. WHAKAEKE. or ENTRANCE - TE WERO O TE AO - The Challenge of the World Today. Composed by Mauritz Kelderman. Mauritz was one of this years tutors. He is Dutch and an ex-pupil pupil of Rutherford High School. Mauritz joined the group as a third former, is an excellent performer, and has a natural flair for teaching and composing. His Whakaeke is based on famous Māori women and men who we looked upon as role models for generations to come., STAND TALL, and be nothing less than your ancestors.
31'53"-33'49" WAIATA TAWHITO or ANCIENT CHANT - MANA WAHINE.
This item was composed by June Mariu in conjuction with the celebrations of WOMENS SUFFERAGE YEAR. June Mariu is Te Whanau-a-Apanui. The item tells of Papatuanuku (earth mother) and Hineahuone (first creation from mother earth) as being the beginning of the Māori race.

33"54" - 37'20" WAIATA -A -RINGA or ACTION SONG is KA TUOHU - BOW IN HUMILITY.
Composed by Hiwaroa Morrison, member of Ngāti Rangiwewehi, and a past tutor of Te Roopu Kotuku. The action song is based on three concepts, Faith, Hope and Love. LOVE being the greatest of all.
37'30"-40'38" POI - Rere Atu Taku Poi Ki Nga Tapuwae. Fly my Poi to NgaTapuwae. - composed by Mauritz Kelderman and June Mariu. It talks about the poi in flight to Nga Tapuwae and witnesses the occasion of the festival. Acknowledges Nga Tapuwae for the ocassion and compliments the young people who are competing., the most important reason, is to be one in spirit.
40'39"-44'25" HAKA - TE MATE O TE AO. - DEATH OF THE WORLD.
Written and composed by Mauritz Kelderman.Leader is Tim Taeri/Ngāti Koroki. The Haka refers back to the beginnig of time to Papatuanuku (earth mother) and Ranginui (sky father) also mentions Tangaroa (God of sea) Tawhirimatea (God of wind) and Tane Mahuta (God of Forest and Birds) . Alas!! Look at the sky and land today, the devastation, the filfth as a result of man.Let us try, with the help of God to restore the respect and prestige that was once so important back to the beginning of time.
44'34"- 46'23" WHAKAWATEA or EXIT - " E TIPU E REA" was composed by Mauritz and is based on a famous quotation by SIR APIRANA TURUPA NGATA , which,originally, became famous by way of a signed autograph.The language is the essence, spirit ant the prestige of the Māori people handed down by our ancestors.
