The club began in 1983 out of a need by a group of Rangatahi to learn Maaoritanga and is based in Nelson. The name at that time was TE WAI TAWHIRI. The members coming from Nga Hau E Wha were tutored by Mr & Mrs J.Nuku. In 1986 the group was renamed TE ROOPU ATAWHAI and have participated in three regional competitions. In the last Te upoko o te waka cultural competitions the group was placed second.
The present tutors are John Haruru and Mrs. Dawn Wells.
